For many motorcyclists, the end of winter means only one thing: motorcycle season is just around the corner! However, before hitting the road, it's essential to be well-prepared. Not only should your motorcycle be in top condition, but your equipment also deserves proper attention. In this blog, we provide tips on how to prepare optimally so you can hit the road worry-free.

1. CHECK YOUR MOTORCYCLE

After winter storage, your motorcycle needs a spring cleaning and maintenance service. Be sure to check the following:

Documents: Make sure your insurance is valid and you have all other necessary documents with you.

Tires: Check the tread depth and tire pressure. Cold winter temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop, reducing grip.

Lighting: Before riding, it's recommended to test all lights.

Battery: Has your motorcycle been stationary for a long time? The battery might have lost its charge. Using a trickle charger can prevent your motorcycle from not starting.

Fluids: Check oil level, brake fluid, and coolant. Top up or replace these as needed for optimal performance. Also fill your tank with fresh fuel.

Also make sure to check if your motorcycle has no leaks. It's best to check the following parts:

  • The fork seals
  • The brake calipers (also test your brakes before riding)
  • The hydraulic brake system
  • The hydraulic clutch if applicable
  • Between the cylinders and cylinder heads
  • Output shaft (front sprocket)

2. CHECK YOUR MOTORCYCLE GEAR

During winter, your motorcycle clothing has probably been stored in the closet for an extended period. Before getting back on the bike, it's important to inspect everything for wear and functionality.

Motorcycle jacket & pants

Check your motorcycle jacket and pants for tears, loose seams, and worn zippers. Waterproof clothing, such as Gore-Tex motorcycle jackets and pants, should be checked for leaks. For leather gear, it's important to maintain it according to specific steps, which we've described in our leather maintenance blog. If you don't want to do this yourself, you can always visit one of our MKC stores where our colleagues will be happy to help you.

Want to do it yourself? You'll need a leather cleaning spray to clean the suit and leather grease to maintain flexibility, smell, and durability. Consider refreshing your gear with a water-repellent spray, like the products found in our maintenance department.

Helmet

The helmet is one of the most important parts of your gear. Check if the lining is still comfortable and if there are no damages or cracks in the visor or shell. Is your helmet older than four years? Then it might be time for a new one. Check out our range of motorcycle helmets for the best protection.

Is your helmet due for a good cleaning after this check? We've created a blog explaining how to do this in 5 steps.

Gloves & Boots

Gloves and boots wear out faster than you might think. Inspect them for tears and worn stitching. Waterproof gloves can lose their effectiveness over time, so test if they still provide adequate protection. If in doubt, you can always choose a new pair from our collection of motorcycle gloves and boots.

3. LAYERING IS KEY

Spring can be unpredictable: cold mornings and warm afternoons. Wearing layers is the best way to flexibly deal with changing temperatures. Consider thermal wear under your motorcycle suit and a windproof midlayer like a softshell jacket. Check out our thermal wear collection to stay warm and comfortable on the road.

4. ENSURE EXTRA VISIBILITY

In spring, car drivers aren't yet used to the presence of motorcyclists on the road. Therefore, make sure you're highly visible. Consider clothing with reflective details or wear a reflective vest. A clear visor or a helmet with an integrated sun visor can also contribute to better visibility and increased safety.
