Although many motorcyclists put their two-wheelers in the garage during the winter months, there are always go-getters who just keep riding. For these winter toughs, the right gear is essential - and that means an outfit that can withstand the elements. Waterproofing is indispensable here, but one waterproof is not the other.

When looking for a new outfit, you quickly stumble across a lot of different terms: GORE-TEX, Hydratex, Drystar, D-Dry, and terms like Z-Liner, G-Liner and laminate. The latter in particular - laminated motorbike clothing - is a real gamechanger for riders who don't let winter showers or blistering cold stop them.

In this blog, you'll discover everything you need to know about waterproof motorbike clothing and why laminated options are your best friend during the cold months.

So what exactly is laminated motorbike clothing?

Laminated motorbike clothing basically differs from other motorbike clothing in the way the waterproof membrane (rain layer) is integrated into the motorbike clothing. In the case of a laminate, this water-stopping layer is glued directly to the outer layer. So there is no space in between. In addition, the seams are sealed with a special tape.

Advantages of laminated motorbike clothing

The main advantage of laminated construction, is that the outer fabric also forms the barrier against the rain and thus does not absorb water. This prevents your suit from feeling soggy or you from starting your return journey in a heavy and damp jacket after a day's work. Moreover, this way the membrane is best protected and the construction is the most compact.

Differences in laminated motorbike clothing

With laminated motorbike clothing, you are talking about the way the rain membrane is used. It does not stand for a particular brand, as there are more of them offering this technique. GORE-TEX is the most prominent in this, but other brands like D-Dry, Raintex or Alpinestars Drystar also use this technique. In price, laminated motorbike clothing is always more expensive, as production costs are higher. The price also depends on the type of membrane and the corresponding water column, as well as other features such as extra linings, the type of protectors and other possible features.

Budget-friendly laminated motorbike suits

Richa tops the list with the most economical laminated outfit. Combining the Infinity 2 Pro motorbike jacket with the Richa Colorado 2 Pro motorbike trousers (both available for both women and men), you will lack nothing when riding through a heavy shower. The necessary adjustment options and a removable thermal lining make it an affordable but serious touring outfit. The processed rain membrane is from Aquashell and offers excellent rainproof properties. Unlike the 2 models below, the Richa Infinity 2 Pro comes with a D3O back protector as standard.

From Dutch soil comes the REV'IT! Horizon 3 outfit, which is also available for both women and men. This motorbike suit is fitted with level 2 protectors and has a Hydratex Lite laminated membrane against the abrasion-resistant outer fabric.

The Italians at Dainese have come up with the Springbok 3L Absoluteshell motorbike jacket. This jacket also features level 2 protectors on the limbs. The Dainese jacket has an Absoluteshell waterproof layer and also a removable thermal liner just like the other 2 models above.

Mid-range laminated motorbike suits

When you often find yourself caught up in a downpour, you also want an outfit that will stand you in it. If the Gore-Tex logo appears on your clothing then you can be sure of that. The same goes for the Richa Atlantic - how could it be otherwise with a name like that - which features a laminated Gore-Tex membrane. The necessary ventilation, a removable lining and D3O CE level 2 protectors, including D3O back protector!

The REV'IT! Poseidon 3 outfit is the direct counterpart of the Richa Atlantic. Also made of a 3L Gore-Tex membrane and topped with a detachable collar to keep the rain away from your neck as well. Both the jacket and trousers feature the patented aquadefence system to ensure adequate ventilation in warmer conditions.

High-end laminated biker suits

The Alpinestars Altamira Gore-Tex Jacket is perfect for all-weather motorbike rides. The Gore-Tex laminate provides waterproofing and breathability, while the removable thermal lining offers warmth in the cold. The shoulders and elbows feature level 2 protectors. The jacket is Tech Air-compatible and has pockets for extra protection. Reflective details and an extended back panel improve visibility and comfort.

Richa's top-of-the-line suit is the Armada 1.1 Gore-Tex Pro. The laminated 3L Gore-Tex Pro outer layer is extra abrasion-resistant and maximally waterproof, while the Airtech Control System ensures you stay comfortable even in warm conditions. The removable storm collar, mesh panels and Coolmax technology provide even more temperature regulation. The integrated and removable kidney belt provides extra support and the D3O level 2 protectors, including back protector, offer comfortable safety.
